School faculty members, parents, and administrators quietly celebrated the success of Measure D amid dozens of election-night campaign parties across San Luis Obispo County.
According to the final unofficial election night results, 71 percent of the votes were in favor of the measure, with only 28 percent against it.
Measure D will grant San Luis Coastal Unified School District schools $177 million, allowing them to renovate and refurbish their campuses. The majority of that money will go to San Luis Obispo and Morro Bay high schools, the two campuses with the most need for renovation.
“Obviously we’re very thrilled about Measure D passing,” said Leslie O’Connor, principal of San Luis Obispo High School. “The margin by which it passed really was a testament to the community of what the school district can do to improve the facilities.”
According to O’Connor, the next step for district schools will be to form a committee of faculty members, students, and parents in order to plan how the renovations will take shape.
“We’re planning on working with an architecture review board and visiting campuses of other schools that have gone through the same thing,” O’Connor said. “We want to talk with their teams and glean as much information from them as possible. We don’t want to just sit in a room and think about what we want to do.”
But O’Connor said that the entire process will be slow. Once the committee determines a plan, the approval process alone takes 18 months to complete. O’Connor said they expect to break ground with renovations some time in August of 2016.
