Return the pledge to secular form

Athens, Georgia

I don’t think we need to keep “under God” in the Pledge of Allegiance (“Remove ‘under God’ from the Pledge of Allegiance,” June 25). As every thinking person surely knows, it does not reflect the reality of America. We are not one nation under God. We are one nation under many Gods. Our citizens follow many diverse faiths and creeds.

Like President Obama observed, “For we know that our patchwork heritage is a strength, not a weakness. We are a nation of Christians and Muslims, Jews and Hindus, and nonbelievers. We are shaped by every language and culture, drawn from every end of this Earth.”

To those who wish to cling so tenaciously to this latter-day addition to the pledge, I have a question or two. Why do you struggle so hard to make others feel unwelcome? Why do you work with such dedication to alienate your fellow countrymen and women? All we ask is that the pledge be restored to its original, secular form. Will this one concession toward tolerence harm your faith in any meaningful manner?
