Regarding the shooting in the Holocaust Memorial Museum

Arroyo Grande

I have no wish to take anything away from security guards, police officers, and others who protect us. They are our first line of defense, putting their lives on the line while often receiving minimal pay. But I wonder how a man can walk into a national museum in our nation’s capital carrying a loaded rifle? Did he just walk down a busy sidewalk, up a number of steps, through an entryway heavily populated with tourists and school children, to open fire?

I understand that when devastation happens I want to make some sense of it, perhaps in the belief that if I can point a finger, then it can’t happen again. Yet it has to be asked:  Where was our security? Where were the city police, state police, FBI, Homeland Security—someone whose job it is to watch over us? I know we can never forget 9-ll, that we must never become complacent toward those who hate, those who would bring harm to us. I refuse to live in fear but I realize that in today’s world, we all need to be aware and do indeed need to be our brothers’ keeper.
