Recycled fashion

There’s no downside to the third annual Swap-O-Rama-Rama, a community clothes-recycling extravaganza going down Saturday, June 2. First of all, you can bring all your unwanted clothing for someone else to reuse, providing you with a cleaner closet and a soft, fuzzy feeling of community mindedness. More importantly, you can learn how to create something absolutely fabulous from the thousands of pounds of used clothing donated by others. Featuring 10 do-it-yourself workshops led by local artists—including alterations, embellishments, pillows, activities for kids—the event will teach you how to modernize your current wardrobe, thus saving money and creating fashions that are uniquely yours.

Sewing and Yudu screen-printing machines will be made available for participants. The event takes place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., with live music from Zongo All-Stars from 2 to 4 p.m. Organizers will award prizes for the most uniquely created piece of clothing, and attendees will be welcome to model their finished products in a “Zongo Dance Circle.”

“SORR is about bringing the community together and inspiring each other to ignite our creative passion, while finding ways to reduce, reuse, and recycle,” said Anna Lillian Mercado, producer of SLO County’s Swap-O-Rama-Rama.

Your $5 (presale) or $10 (at the door) will benefit an organization called PEAK (Promoting Extracurricular Activities for Kids), whose sole mission is to enable Pacheco and C.L Smith students to participate in extracurricular activities (visit peakslo.org for more on the organization).

To purchase presale tickets, e-mail your name and number of tickets to sloswaporama@gmail.com, or call 242-6484. Each participant must bring a bag of clean, unwanted clothing to donate to the event.

The Swap-O-Rama-Rama takes place at C.L. Smith Elementary School at 1375 Balboa St. in San Luis Obispo. Unused clothing at the end of the day will be donated to Goodwill.
