Cucumbers are amazing. They de-puff your eyes, turn boring old H20 into “spa water,” and taste effortlessly delicious when tossed with yogurt, herbs, and lemon juice (mmm ... tatziki!). Cukes are also a fabulous addition to vodka, which—let’s face it—could use a little help in the flavor department. Re:Find Distillery in Paso Robles knows what’s up when it comes to crafting a cool cucumber vodka that tastes naturally like ... well ... actual cucumbers. Maybe it’s because the distillers work with local farmers to create this seasonally fresh spirit, or perhaps it’s the premium alcohol base crafted from high-caliber wine grapes. One thing is crystal clear: This vodka needs no mixer.

Four years ago, Jason Carvalho and Kevin Nickell opened BarrelHouse Brewing Co. with help from longtime friend Chris Vaughn. Since then, the Paso Robles craft brewery has offered up dozens of unique beers (including new sours and a mango IPA that has taken the market by storm), built an amphitheater, hosted more than 180 music events, and opened a second location in downtown SLO (a third Visalia location is in the works). This week, let’s raise a glass to BarrelHouse’s recent four-year anniversary with (what else) the brewery’s Celebratory Stout Snakebite Ale aged in port foeder. Want to know how they made it? Glad you asked! From the guys: The team co-fermented a robust stout with the juice from apples and Brett in port foeder (that’s a really large wooden vat used to store wine). There, it aged until being blended with two of BarrelHouse’s most sacred beers: Curly Wolf and Heidbanger. Tart and complex, this offering boasts characters of fig, vanilla, caramel, and apple pie. If none of that makes sense to you, that’s totally OK. Just drink it!
