Ranch goes to auction

Looking for a charming ranch so you can put down your roots on the cheap? You may be in luck. Two ranches just outside of San Luis Obispo city limits will be auctioned off at 1 p.m. on Feb. 10 at the Madonna Inn. There will be no minimums or reserves, according to JP King Auctioneers, though you will need to have $25,000 on hand to bid.

The land is being sold by Cathie and Karen Twisselman and was once owned by their father, Alex Madonna.

The Twisselmans have been trying to get rid of the land for a while. In a YouTube video directed and uploaded by Cathie Twisselman a year ago—titled “Twisselman Country—Let It Be Yours”—the two ranches were offered for $15 million. The price was later reduced to $12 million, and then $10 million last October.

The video shows the property’s sweeping views while cattle and men on horses roam across the land. The soundtrack from The Cowboys—a John Wayne film—plays while sales pitches such as “Own, raise, and eat your own NATURAL, HEALTHY GRASS FED BEEF, FRUIT AND VEGETABLES … or NOT” and “You’re being given the chance to live the dream that most people will only be able to dream about” roll down the screen.

The two ranches are subdivided into parcels and can therefore undergo some limited development if the future owners want it, said John Brusselle, a SLO County planner.
