Racism is far from over

I admit that I have my own personal bias and have resisted a response to Mr. Otis Page, who is of an obvious antithetical ideology than I. However, after reading his recent response about Obama and racism (“Playing the Race Card is wrong,” Aug. 29), I have to clarify some facts.

Mr. Page notes that there are no “fascistic Klan thugs and mobs today.”

I imagine it’s refreshing to read and understand what supports your denial/ideology. However, facts seem to dictate that there are in fact numerous “Klan thugs” engaging in activity, even here in beautiful California.

According to the Southern Poverty Law Center (which is a nonprofit dedicated to ending racist groups in the world), there are 82 Hate Groups in the state, including 10 designated as “Racist Skinheads,” nine as “Neo-Nazis,” and 10 as “White Nationalists.”

Arguably, we have made some progress from the ’60s, but racism and discrimination are far from over. To dismiss any acknowledgement of it is not only disputing the facts, but also continuing to perpetuate the problem.
