Their constituents have a huge incentive to block housing, as reducing the supply pushes up their house values. It's NIMBY homeowners who have made SLO into the #6 least affordable place to live in the U.S.

Charging more for parking would help to free up parking spots. Either you pay for a spot with money, or you pay for it with your time as you drive around trying to find a spot. And we all pay the costs of traffic, polluted air, and people being killed in accidents.

Do we prefer the sight of sprawl, and homeless people on the street, to tall buildings? Building height restrictions are the locals' version of Trump's wall.

It's not a coincidence that the state's most expensive housing markets have the highest rates of unsheltered homelessness.

I'd be interested to hear the author put forward some workable alternative approaches.
