NEW TIMES What prompted you to address the need for a new skate park in SLO?

BATES What’s really cool about the campaign to build a new skate park is that it came from the community. It is the definition of grassroots.

 

NEW TIMES How did the community voice their want for a new park?

BATES Every year there is a community forum, where people can come give their opinion where the budget should be spent. The skate community organized themselves, came out in numbers, and told city council, “We want a skate park.”

 

NEW TIMES How much do you need to build the new skate park, and how much have you raised?

BATES The park will cost a little over $2.5 million to build. The city has tentatively committed about $1 million. We have accumulated about $50,000, which includes a grant from the Tony Hawk Foundation.

 

NEW TIMES How is the Central Coast Monster Skate Park Series going?

BATES It’s been going great so far. We’ve had about average attendance, compared to the last few years. What is different this year is that they have added Morrow Bay Skate Park to the series. They are bringing in ramps and other equipment for the SLO skate contest on April 28.

 

NEW TIMES How can people donate to the skate park fund?

BATES We currently have two community campaigns going on. One is the Buy a Brick, Build a Dream campaign, where you donate $125 for a personalized brick that will set in the park. Also, when you register for any SLO Parks and Rec. activity, you can add an additional $5 that will go towards the fund. We have also set up coin jars at all the local skate shops.
