NEW TIMES What is the purpose of [the Nerdy New Year] workshop?

TONASCIA So many people, especially over the holidays, have been getting these new e-readers. Not everybody knows how to use them, and we can help with that.


NEW TIMES When do the workshops take place?

TONASCIA They run from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on the 8th, the 15th, and the 29th of January at the San Luis Obispo County Library.


NEW TIMES Where can people find more information on attending the workshop?

TONASCIA The library website,


NEW TIMES Do you need your own e-reader to take the workshop or can you rent one at the library?

TONASCIA You can read on the computer, but if you have an iPhone, iPad, Kindle, Nook, or anything like that, and you bring your own device, it’s even better. We can show them how to work it hands on.


NEW TIMES Do people seem to prefer digital books to hard covers and paperbacks?

TONASCIA Not so much. Some people do, some people don’t. It’s more of an age thing.


NEW TIMES Can you rent e-books from the library at home?

TONASCIA Any book that we have digitally you can download from home. There’s how-to videos and instructions available on our website.


NEW TIMES Do you think e-books will ever replace paper books?

TONASCIA I can’t see it, but maybe I’m just being very optimistic.


NEW TIMES Do you prefer to read e-books or regular books?

TONASCIA I like the idea of e-books, and I have an iPhone and iPad, but at least for me, it’s so much easier to just pick a book up off the shelf and read it.


NEW TIMES Where is your favorite place to read?

TONASCIA Might be a little boring, but at home cozy under the covers. And I can do that with my iPad or a book.


NEW TIMES Describe the smell of a typical book.

TONASCIA Um … I have a terrible sense of smell.


NEW TIMES Describe the smell of a typical e-book.

TONASCIA Nothing. It would be absolutely nothing.
