Questions For: Melody Mullis

Pioneer Museum assistant secretary, Star Wars replica exhibit

NEW TIMES Where did the idea for the Star Wars replica exhibit come from?

MULLIS The idea came from a suggestion by Earl Cisco of Studio Replicas who came to the museum a few months ago and contacted the display committee. He told us it was the 35th anniversary of the original Star Wars movie and he suggested a Star Wars theme display of items he has in his collection.

NEW TIMES How long has it been up and when will it come down?

MULLIS The exhibit has been up since the first of December and will come down the first week in January.

NEW TIMES Is this the first time the Pioneer Museum has done an exhibit based on something fictional?

MULLIS This exhibit is unusual for us, yes. However, the museum has many different types of artifacts, including some movie posters and original film projectors used by the local movie theater. The most unusual part of the exhibit is that it is not about a time period that is distant and that I can only imagine. Star Wars is 35 years old, and I am part of that history. I recall going to the theater and watching the film when it first came out and marveling at the technology that was required to create it.

NEW TIMES What are some of the highlights?

MULLIS Some of the highlights of the exhibit include full-size Darth Vader, R2D2, Yoda, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and others. There are miniatures recreating a few scenes from the film and a Stormtrooper helmet and light sabers on exhibit.

NEW TIMES Which of the movies is your favorite?

MULLIS My personal favorite has to be the original film from 1977. It was a terrific story, action, and humor and the amazing special effects work that made it seem so realistic.

NEW TIMES If you could go to dinner with one of the characters, who would you choose?

MULLIS Going to dinner with one of the characters? That would be a tough choice; if I had to pick one only, I would have to go with Yoda for his wise counsel.

NEW TIMES What exhibit do you have planned after the Star Wars display is done?

MULLIS The next major exhibit (although exact details and timing is uncertain at this moment) will return the museum back to more traditional displays with a train theme. The museum may prepare a short brief interim exhibit until all the pieces are prepped and ready for our train exhibit, but it will also be spectacular exhibit when complete.
