I have watched with concern and interest the feedback North County residents are providing on the proposed psychiatric facility in Templeton.
A psychiatric facility in this area is desperately needed. I would like to share my experience of working for several years at Charter Psychiatric Hospital in Westlake Village. Westlake is a rather exclusive, wealthy area close to Highway 101 near Los Angeles. Charter was located on a residential street around the corner from million dollar homes.
A majority of the patients came from the surrounding area.
The setup at Charter was similar to what is being proposed by Vizion in Templeton. Charter was a locked facility, so in order to access any area other than the lobby, a key was necessary. The facility also had classrooms.
As an experienced special education teacher, I was hired to provide classroom instruction for children and adolescents who were hospitalized. I saw young people and adults receive the help they needed close to home.
Charter provided community information at seminars and consultation with lead mental health specialists. In addition, a day program for adults with dementia was included. Transportation was provided to and from the hospital for the participants. Parent and family groups were available to support patient progress and after care.
Please support this new facility.
