Price Canyon project shrinks

The Pismo Beach City Council voted March 1 to exclude a 530-acre section of the land slated for the Price Canyon project in an effort to secure county approval to expand the city’s reach into the canyon.

The Spanish Springs North Ranch land was excluded from a proposed Memorandum of Understanding (MOU)—a document outlining future expansion of Pismo Beach—between the city and county because staffers of both concluded that development “will most likely take place beyond the 20-year horizon … and it does not represent the logical progression of growth.”

The Price Canyon developers had hoped to begin development of the project by building a hotel, vineyard, and large houses. They can still develop but it will have to be done under the auspices of the county.

The owners of the land, Virtual Reality Enterprises, L.L.C., did get a mention in the proposed document. They requested that their property be regarded as an “Area of Special Interest” in the document. This addition to the document, which will guide development in the area for many years, was only made publicly available the morning of the meeting.
