Congratulations, New Times, for recognizing Kathy Johnston’s talent and for being recognized by the National Newspaper Association for her reporting. Kathy really did a fabulous job of providing an informative read and researching a difficult story in her article "Shut down for Speaking Up" (Oct. 30, 2008) focusing on the proposed sand mines in the Salinas River, and the lawsuits that are served to quiet public protest. Good work Kathy Johnston and New Times!!!
Editor’s note: The National Newspaper Association awarded New Times first place for environmental reporting among non-daily newspapers with circulations greater than 6,000 copies, in the 2009 Better Newspaper Contest. Kathy Johnston’s article earned the honor.
