Nacimiento pipeline comes closer

Progress is continuing on the proposed construction of a 45-mile water pipeline that would bring a major new water supply to Paso Robles, Templeton, Atascadero, San Luis Obispo, and Cayucos.

The SLO County Board of Supervisors on March 6 approved the latest contract for the Nacimiento pipeline project, for the acquisition of right-of-way along the route. Another pipeline contract, totaling more than $1.2 million, was authorized in February for environmental consulting services, including $365,200 for archaeological work.

The pipeline, which would carry up to 15,570 acre-feet of water a year from Lake Nacimiento, is projected to cost $185 million. Some water agencies have already raised their rates to help pay for the new supply.

Cayucos is the latest addition to the Nacimiento project, with an agreement negotiated in October 2006.
