Mr. Hodin, your arrogance is showing

I doubt you are a classical music listener; your condescension is arrogant. I like almost all types of music, from rock, Irish, Appalachian, and jazz to classical pieces. The music program in your symphony death cartoon from the July 2 New Times reads, “ ... More Music by Dead Composers!” Using that logic, I guess we should throw out all the literary works by dead authors; perhaps history in general should go since the people involved are long dead, and for that matter let’s throw out any music by dead rock or pop stars: Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Frank Sinatra, and oh so many more. You may argue those artists are more contemporary, but you are forgetting that music, like everything else, is based on the evolution of various styles over the years. Aside from standing on its own, classical music informs through its musical foundation. For example Nina Simone, like many musicians, was classically trained and, as reviewers noted, it wove its way into her jazz/bluesy style. I don’t think we’re quite ready to bury the symphony or classical music even if you chose to let it go and chide the rest of us with your condescension.
