Moving-company owner sentenced to jail

Mark Frey, owner of San Luis Obispo County-based ASAP Movers, was found guilty on three counts of felony insurance and tax fraud on June 21, said Deputy District Attorney Steven von Dohlen. Frey received 90 days in County Jail, three years of felony probation, and was ordered to finish paying $96,617 in restitution.

Frey was found guilty on two counts of tax evasion for filing a false return in order to avoid paying unemployment-insurance taxes and tax fraud for not collecting or paying unemployment insurance. The other count is for knowingly making false and fraudulent statements to the state insurance fund between October 2002 and June 2004.

State investigators grew interested in Frey after he told the Tribune in 2004 that he employed 44 people and was the second-busiest mover in the county. Shortly afterward, investigators served warrants on Frey’s home and business, which yielded the documents necessary to prove their suspicions.
