NEW TIMES: What inspired you to start a new farmers market in San Luis Obispo?


BENSALEM: Many of the local farmers and vendors mentioned that they would like to have another farmers market in San Luis Obispo. We spoke together about the idea, and I offered to them a day and a location. We figured it would provide an alternative for people who couldn’t make the farmers market on Thursday and Saturday in an area that promotes healthy living like Kennedy Club Fitness.


NEW TIMES: How has the response been for starting a farmers market next to Kennedy?


BENSALEM: We’ve received a lot of positive energy from the locals and farmers of San Luis Obispo County. However, at the beginning, it wasn’t easy to start because we had to go through the city, county, health, and food departments in order to finalize this project. Overall, the support of the community and the humble farmers who were willing to provide an extra day of great produce were incredibly helpful.


NEW TIMES: What kind of message are you trying to send about buying local?


BENSALEM: We would like to encourage the “Go Green” movement, and avoid the costly packaging and shipping that’s necessary to ship food into this county. We want to support the local farmers in the area, and there’s no reason we shouldn’t, with all the beautiful produce this county provides.


NEW TIMES: When will this farmers market take place?


BENSALEM: Our first farmers market will start April 11 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. We will be hosting this every Sunday, rain or shine. We have a website that provides more information about entertainment, and the local farmers who will be selling produce. Visit for details. We hope to see you there!
