Re: “Liberals with guns: Don't like the NRA but love the Second Amendment and Obama? There's a club for that

Oregonnotcalifornia: By "not working" I presume you mean "not persuading" and I accept that.

But the logic is not flawed. The fact is that living in a representative democracy is a constant compromise. The current hyper-polarization in our society requires everyone to "line up" with 100% of the dogma on a "side". Sorry, I am far too individualistic for that. I reserve the right to be a social liberal who thinks about the 2nd Amendment like a pioneer and thinks about climate change like someone who is living through it.

The requirement to "line up" with the dogma of a "side" is not working for me, to borrow your turn of phrase.

Many years ago, I served in the US Military to assure that all Americans have the freedom to think and vote as they wish. I take the idea of "freedom" seriously. And in my mind, both sides of the political lines have much to learn about freedom. Freedom "from" and freedom "to" are both ignored by both the left and the right IMO.

"Ian Tanner asked:

Why are these people voting for liberals who will take all our gun rights away[?]"

On the LGC Forum, we talk about this issue often. For most members (not all), it devolves to wanting a more tolerant and better run Government. All of us are often forced to decide if we are 'single issue voters' or not. And when some of what we believe in conflicts with a large group with whom we otherwise disagree, we must make a decision.

This is the challenge of a representative form of democracy of course. If everything was "direct democracy" we could vote for each issue as a stand alone proposition.

Many of our members spend considerable time educating "liberal" politicians about the reality of the Second Amendment and the fact that there are millions of "liberal" gun owners. As stated in the article, we find that the solutions provided by the left for gun violence are often misdirected.
