Local legend with a heart of gold

San Luis Obispo County lost one of its greatest ambassadors, one whose organization, the Central Coast Wine Classic, gave the funds it raised to local nonprofits.

It was my pleasure to meet Mr. Archie McLaren for the first time in 1993, when he included an elegant dinner at Hearst Castle in the Wine Classic festivities. Archie only missed one year at the Hearst Castle dinner due to health concerns.

Archie always gave back to the community, and those tokens of support will surely be missed.

Quirky, but with a heart of gold, Archie always went out of his way to give back to the nonprofit organizations.

Maybe I'm a little prejudiced, because Hearst Castle was a recipient of his generosity. Some of those funds helped restore and conserve the art housed at San Simeon.

Archie was also a good friend and emissary for San Luis Obispo County, and I will personally miss him.

Be at peace, my friend.
