Local art advocate hospitalized

Jack Mothershed, a 60-year-old Cayucos resident, was hospitalized following a paragliding accident on Oct. 22. Mothershed was paragliding near Cuesta Ridge with a group of friends when he was blown off course. As of the afternoon of Oct. 24, he remained in serious condition at Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center's Intensive Care Unit, according to Sierra Vista spokesman Ron Yukel.

Mothershed is a former board member of ARTS Obispo and an active participant in the local poetry community. For several years, he organized and participated in SLO Deliverance, which was a monthly poetry reading at local cafes. He also wrote a monthly Poet's Corner column for New Times and is the author of several books. He's known locally for his energetic, and at times forceful support for the arts. A poet to the core, Mothershed signs many of his e-mails and articles with the valediction "metaphors be with you."
