Now that the filing period for candidates of local elected offices has closed, we’ll begin a very robust campaign season right up until voters go to the polls on Nov. 6. As a candidate to retain my seat on City Council, I’m committed to and encourage my opponents to keep the discussions and debates focused on the issues and not fall into the trap of negative attack ads and assaults on each others’ character. The voters in our community deserve nothing less.
We saw what a distraction that was in our local primary election this past June, and we continue to see it across the country in the national campaigns. On behalf of the residents of our community, I encourage my fellow candidates to join me in publicly denouncing any such individual or organization that takes on an agenda of negative attacks. It’s incumbent upon each of us who choose to serve the public in this capacity to protect the integrity of the process and deny the infiltration of any self-serving interest that would gain from the distraction of the important issues we face. The educated electorate will decide who’s best qualified for the job, while we as candidates should take every opportunity to eliminate the rhetoric that is neither productive or respectful to the people we serve. I know we can do it.
