Let me Teach you something, Shredder

San Luis Obispo

While I often feel, as you seem to, that the state of the education system in America is terrible, I take issue with a statement in your most recent Shredder post, “Sad new world” (Feb. 21).

Teach does not cost SLCUSD anything extra to operate. In fact, according to the State of California Accountability Report Cards, it costs SLCUSD 20 percent less to educate a child at Teach than the district average. Teach saves the school district money. Closure of Teach Elementary School will not give the school district any more money for computer labs or special education, because Teach does not take any additional money from the school district for computer labs or special education and actually may use less. If your kid loses his/her computer lab or special education, it is because schools aren’t well funded. Period.

It’s OK to make fun of me and other Teach parents if you like. And what you say about standing between a parent and what s/he thinks is best for his/her child is true. But we are not whining, nor are we finger-pointing. We are trying to preserve a long-standing school that we know that some children really need. If someone was taking something away from your child that your child needs, you too would throw a “red-alert hissy.” SLO needs Teach Elementary, and our whole county benefits from encouraging each and every child, whether they are accelerated in school or falling behind, to be and become his/her best.

I understand your sarcasm. But I, for one, would like to see my children excel in school, go to college and get real jobs that really offer a benefit to the world. And I hope they will do so in America. And I sincerely hope that they won’t go into debt to fund it. Hopefully our human future will include doctors, engineers, and inventors. And if my children do grow up to be trench diggers or toilet scrubbers, I hope that they take pride in their jobs and be the best trench diggers and toilet scrubbers they can be.
