Lead found in play mat

Evidence of lead was recently discovered on an outdoor rubber play mat during an inspection of the Cal Poly Child Development Preschool Laboratory, Cal Poly reported in a recent news conference.

In an effort to help detect poisoning, SLO County Public Health officials are strongly urging parents of children who attended the preschool within the last year to have their kids examined by a pediatrician to test for elevated levels of lead.

According to David Ragsdale, Cal Poly environmental health and safety manager, the university estimates that the mat was installed in 1966, but he said there's no reason for past attendees to be alarmed.

"If there was an exposure, the kids who recently left the center would have the highest level," he said. "If we see any kids with elevated levels, then we start moving backwards into time."

Ragsdale said there have been no reports of children who attended the preschool testing positive for elevated lead levels.
