Le fromage, le fromage!

Cheese seems to be the theme this December, and who doesn’t like cheese anyways? Cheese can be paired with just about anything: wine, beer, fruit, nuts, meat, honey, chocolate, you name it. Radio stations are already talking about tickets for the Mac & Cheese festival next summer, we just ran a cover story about the Central Coast Creamery in Paso, and now, we’ve stumbled across Fromagerie Sophie! It’s a Paris-inspired cheese shop, owned and operated by Sophie Boban-Doering, that opened just a month ago downtown, which also happens to carry a few of the Central Coast Creamery’s cheeses as well.

At Fromagerie Sophie, they carry a variety of cheese, some local, and many imported, and sell by the pound. There are also a few side pairings such as prosciutto, pate, olives, and baguettes. All cheese and meats are displayed behind a glass case, and each item comes with a sign listing everything from the price, the type, like firm pasteurized cheese, where it was produced, the description of what your palate may taste, and what beverages will complement it. 

Though the majority of the products are imported, there are a good handful of local items that Boban-Doering has worked into her shop, like cheese from Rinconada Dairy in Santa Margarita, honey from TheraBee in Atascadero, and the aforementioned Central Coast Creamery’s cheeses.

Though Fromagerie Sophie has only been open about a month, business has caught on nicely. The holiday season has also helped with the push of sales on whole blocks of cheeses to the extent that Boban-Doering’s quickly trying to refill the case so there are no holes. Cheese varies from person to person so she tries to get a feel for what an individual is looking for. Sometimes they already have their pairing items picked out and are looking for a specific tasting cheese, and sometimes people just wander in with a certain craving for that day and she sets them up with samples and suggestions. Her favorite is any triple-cream-made cheese: she described it with such passion that my mouth watered for this smooth-tasting cheese to the extent that I almost demanded, “One block of anything triple cream, please!”

For a town that’s growing as quickly as San Luis Obispo, where big box store corporations are coming in and swallowing up the mom-and-pop shops two at a time it seems, we sometimes forget to take it SLOw, to enjoy the little things, like a stroll through downtown. But Fromagerie Sophie is here to remind us to take it easy in an elegant, yet fun manner. Fromagerie Sophie will also be participating in Art After Dark for the first time on Friday, Jan. 3, featuring artist Skip Moss.
