Keep teen-pregnancy rates low

Teen pregnancy rates in the U.S. and California are at the lowest level ever recorded. Young people are waiting longer to have sex, and they are more likely to use contraception when they become sexually active. In California we've had the biggest reduction in teen births of any state in the nation. Studies show that this reduction is the result of increased access to low-cost family planning services, and age-appropriate, comprehensive sexuality education.

However, the U.S. continues to have the highest teen pregnancy rate of any developed country. Around 800,000 American teenagers become pregnant each year. Yet the federal government spends over $150 million each year on ineffective "abstinence-only until marriage" programs, which intentionally withhold information about contraception and safer sex.

What you can do to help:

Support young people, and help them feel good about themselves so they won't use sex and parenthood to feel valued and loved.

Support comprehensive, age-appropriate sexuality education in schools at both local and federal levels.

Support state funding for family planning, pregnancy prevention, and youth development programs.
