Keep our Shell Beach path open

I was one of about 20 speakers to address the Pismo Beach City Council on Dec. 21, 2004 on the topic of the recently blocked access path to the beach in the St. Andrew’s By the Sea section of Shell Beach.

My message was simple:

My family members and I have frequently used the path since our move here in May 1969. I used it as an integral part of my daily walk. My daughter accessed her teen-years job using the path. My son trod the path in his surfing years. Most recently, we all used the path to take their children, my grandchildren, to Spyglass Park. Our story is a common one for those of us fortunate enough to live in this neighborhood.

The Council meeting presentations by
my fellow citizens further opened my eyes to the importance of the access path in all our lives. People with disabilities had easier transit to the ocean, surfers were safer in entering the water with the availability of the path, others spoke of using the path as a link between two much-used and well-maintained city parks.

I ask that the City Council prevail and keep the path open. I believe it is the right thing to do in the name of community and generosity of spirit: valuable qualities that make life richer and fuller for all.
