KCBX FM Public Radio, 90.1 MHz

Guy Rathbun, Program Manager

NEW TIMES: What holiday programs will you broadcast?

RATHBUN: We plan on broadcasting “A Paul Winter Solstice Concert” at midnight New Years Day.

NEW TIMES: What are the most popular shows you regularly broadcast?

RATHBUN: Democracy Now!, All Things Considered, and Morning Edition are some of our most popular shows. We receive great feedback on all of our shows, but those three are the ones listeners keep commenting on. As of April of 2009 they were in the top five most popular programs.

NEW TIMES: How do you go about choosing the type of news you broadcast to our community?

RATHBUN: We choose the news in a two-part process. We base the news on what we’ve previously aired on the radio, and what kind of follow-ups and new information we can offer to the listener. Of course the feedback is a huge criteria for what we choose to air for our news. We listen carefully to our fans and community in order to offer the kind of news that is relevant to our audiences. Morning Edition offers a great variety of international and national news, as well as coverage on the arts throughout the media. With All Things Considered, they tend to run stories that are most significant, not necessarily  most important.

NEW TIMES: Will there be changes next year?

RATHBUN: Nothing different at this time, but we plan to host some specials. However, we are going to start hosting a live book club every second Tuesday of each month. It’s going to be an hour-long special and we would love to encourage book lovers throughout the county to call in and share some of their favorite books with the rest of the community.
