Jonathan Inge

KGUR station director Cuesta College

NEW TIMES: When will the freestyle dance competition at Cuesta College be held?
Dec. 7 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., but the dancers have to sign up at least a week before. They can start signing up now but the deadline is Nov. 30.
Where is the contest being held?
INGE: Room 5401 in the student center, right next to the cafeteria.
NEW TIMES: Is it group or individual?
INGE: It’s individual.
NEW TIMES: Will the dancers be required to tell you their song?
INGE: They can choose their song. It can be anything they want.
NEW TIMES: Is it open to the public for viewing?
INGE: Anyone can come watch.
NEW TIMES: Have you held one of these before?
INGE: Nope, this is our first one.
NEW TIMES: What is the time limit?
INGE: It’s 5 to 10 minutes, it all depends on the music. If you pick a very long song, then I want to see you do something that would reflect that you need that much time. You can switch between different styles and do whatever you like.
NEW TIMES: Who is the contest open to?
INGE: We are keeping it to students only to know who’s the best dancer on campus.
NEW TIMES: How many people are you expecting to dance?
INGE: I think we’ll have between 15 and 20 dancers. If there’re more that’s great, but we only have a set amount of time for all these dancers.
NEW TIMES: What are the prizes?
INGE: We’re going to have trophies and gifts for first, second, and third place. There are gift certificates and we’re working on getting other trinkets like little electronics and stuff.

NEW TIMES: Are the judges dancers?
INGE: The judges aren’t dancers, but as station director I get to be one of the judges. We’re allowing you to do whatever you like but we’re looking for originality, style and flow. We just want them to get out there and have fun dancing. It’s supposed to be something fun, a way to relax before finals.
