It's official: Cyclists will stop in SLO

On Dec. 6, AEG, the promoters and presenters of the 2007 Amgen Tour of California, announced the specific route and race details for the Feb. 18 through 25 event.

The route will take 16 professional cycling teams on a Tour de France-style race stretching 650 miles from San Francisco to Long Beach. Feb. 22's stage 4 will start in Seaside and take the riders south on Highway 1 through Big Sur and past Hearst Castle to finish at the intersection of Osos and Monterey in San Luis Obispo. Last year's inaugural event also brought the tour downtown.

Christine Wallace, recreation coordinator for City of San Luis Obispo Parks and Recreation and technical director for the Local Organizing Committee for the tour, said that the tour coming to town is "fantastic."

"We have a very large and excited bicycle community in town, and without their support it wouldn't have been able to happen last year," she said.

She explained that this year, they're hoping to expand the festival area in Mission Plaza by bringing in more vendors and exhibitors.

The race will visit 12 host cities including Santa Rosa, Sacramento, San Jose, Solvang, and Santa Barbara for official stage starts and finishes.
