International Sandwich Day

It may be extraneous, and possibly a marketing ploy invented by food industry overlords, but International Sandwich Day, which takes place on Nov. 3, is pretty much the easiest fake holiday to celebrate ever. You’re probably going to eat a sandwich that day anyway, so just remember that it’s International Sandwich Day and you’re good. If you want to make it a little more memorable, however, here are three unique sandwiches you can find right here in SLO County:

• Port Banes—Chipwrecked, Pismo Beach
Fried plantains dusted with chili salt, melted cheddar cheese, fresh cilantro, and chipotle dressing on a toasted roll. Heat, sweetness, freshness, fried stuff, and melted stuff equals delicious. If you’ve never had fried plantains before, this is your chance. Plus you can pair it with one of their many unique varieties of freshly made potato chips.

• Pancetta BLT—DePalo & Sons, Shell Beach
Oven-roasted pancetta fills in for bacon and is accompanied by a healthy slice of Dr. Tedone’s (the owner’s father) homemade mozzarella, pesto mayonnaise, and of course lettuce and tomato, all on toasted sourdough. The thick slice of mozzarella helps balance out the saltiness of the pancetta, and pesto mayo should become a standard American condiment, in my humble opinion.

• PB&C—Avila Valley Barn Farmhouse Deli, Avila Beach
Imagine a PB&J on brioche, grilled on a Panini press, but with olallieberry cobbler, crust included, instead of jelly. For those who are wondering, an olallieberry is a cross between a loganberry and a youngberry—and a loganberry is a cross between a blackberry and a raspberry, and a youngberry is a cross between a blackberry and a dewberry. A dewberry is just its own thing. I’d recommend splitting this one with someone as a dessert and adding some ice cream to the plate.
