History came to life

What a splendid performance was put on recently by the citizens of Atascadero! The Colony musical was part of a centennial celebration and enacted some of the early events from the founding of the city. Anet Carlin and Colleen Goulding wrote the script and brought early founders to life, telling their stories and dreams. E. G. Lewis had a plan for a utopian city and attracted an enthusiastic array of people to implement it.

As a former history teacher, I have rarely seen a community come together and be transported back in time to the site of the sunken gardens with the looming City Hall as a backdrop. The original tent city was recreated and populated with actors in period costumes. Behind the stage was a road, and throughout the performance period vehicles, people, and animals emphasized the feeling that we all were living 100 years ago.

What impressed me most was the audience response, reflecting the enthusiasm the early founders had and showing an enthusiastic love of their city. Director John Lambie pointed out that pictures and videos of this performance will likely be viewed in future centennial celebrations, making the musical part of history. I learned a great deal and was touched, and I am not from Atascadero.
