Hello, world

Pismo Beach

Were it not for two or three very minor differences in preferences, I would be inclined to think that Patrick Howe (“Let it die,” Jan. 15) was my counterpart in a parallel universe. I, too, will be going TV-free with the advent of the digital broadcasting conversion in about one month—and for pretty much the same reasons.

I would only add to his list of reasons my repulsion for the American addiction to the cult of celebrity and its constant promotion on television. While I respect excellence in any vocation, I fail to understand why the lives of “stars” (actors/athletes/musicians) are regarded as worthy of emulation outside their professional aspects. And now, the only local station from which I can consistently get a decent signal spends more time pumping up the their news anchors than it does presenting the news.

It’s time to say bye-bye to the innumerable assaults upon my intelligence by Madison Avenue (and its local counterparts) and to all the moronic “reality” shows catering to the lowest common denominator. There will be a few shows I’ll miss but I’ll get over it and I will put the time saved to much better use.
