Health reforms are good first steps

San Luis Obispo

The passage of health reform is a historic victory for all Americans; for families, seniors, young people, workers, and small businesses alike. All Americans will now have the security of knowing that they don’t risk losing the American dream if they get sick or are in accidents.

Insurance companies will be held accountable, they will no longer be able to hike up premiums, deny care when it’s most needed, or deny coverage because of
pre-existing conditions.

I have a pre-existing condition and have been denied health insurance for individual coverage. A friend of mine is paying more than $700 a month for health insurance, just to cover one person.

My sibling, who is a small business owner, cannot afford health insurance for his family, so they go without. When they get sick or injured, they use the emergency room at the taxpayers’ expense, where the average cost of a one-hour visit is $800. How many visits to the doctor for preventative care would $800 pay for?

Americans can now be secure in knowing that if they become unemployed, change jobs, or start a new business, the new health insurance reforms will keep costs down and provide them with quality, affordable options. The new law is a great beginning; it is not perfect but it is the beginning toward ending the American health care crisis. I thank our president and representatives who had the guts and the foresight to pass this health care reform.
