Growing strong

Reap and sow: Grow grapes? You might want to attend an eight-part seminar on practical grape growing hosted by the Independent Grape Growers of the Paso Robles Area on Jan. 18. This free seminar will include advanced pruning strategies, growing cover crops for erosion control, and more (sign up by emailing [email protected]) … Want to keep your New Year’s resolution to trim up? Look for the Cal Poly Organic Farm booth at your local farmers’ market! Young student farmers are currently hard at work producing all kinds of fresh wintery greens for your dinner table. Snag some earthy turnips or a bunch of fragrant green onions (perfect for topping cozy cold weather soups) at the downtown Thursday night farmers’ market in SLO (See what the farmers are up to daily @calpolyorganicfarm).

New noshes

New café on the block: Café Fiero has opened its doors at 709 Fiero Lane in San Luis Obispo! This new breakfast and lunch spot serves up salads, wraps, coffee, baked goods, breakfast, and sandwiches, including a chicken bahn mi that looks pretty darn delicious (open for breakfast and lunch Monday through Friday; cafefiero.com) … A new bread for a new year: Try an Arroyo Grande fave! Little Red Hen’s got a brand new Moroccan Galette loaf made with semolina flour, a mess of olive oil, and toasted sesame. Sorry in advance to all of you low-carb dieters (follow the business on Facebook for more doughy delicacies).

News nibs

Good to know: Thursdays are “Thirstdays” at Beda’s Biergarten in SLO, which means you can buy a pint of fine German beer or a glass of local wine and get the second drink half off (really, no one should drink alone!) … Fresh and Easy in SLO is gone for good. In its place, you’ll now find Port of Subs, purveyors of fresh sliced sandwiches, wraps, breakfast sandos, and—my guilty pleasure—macaroni salad. Swing by the 2252 Broad St. location and taste for yourself … The Creston Wine Trail invites the community to kick off the first Friday of each month with great taste. Look for wine deals and fun happenings at Stanger, B&E, Shadow Run, and many more along this rural wine trail that twists through the oaks (crestonwinetrail.com).

Hayley Thomas Cain is eating more olive bread in 2017. She can be reached at [email protected].
