Green-light offshore drilling

San Luis Obispo

I am wondering why Supervisor Bruce Gibson voted in favor of a letter opposing offshore oil drilling. If I remember correctly, Gibson is a Ph.D. in geology who formerly analyzed seismic survey data for the major oil companies. Apparently, oil wasn’t dirty enough then for Gibson to draw a paycheck, but now that he’s a green politician, he opposes domestic offshore production.

Much was made at the hearing about the 1969 spill at Santa Barbara.Well, we are no longer living in the ’60s, ’70s, or ’80s. Technology has come a long way and production in the Santa Barbara Channel has an extremely good record. But this good news was neglected in favor of fear mongering, even by such knowledgeable experts as Gibson, who obviously prefers ignorance over education.

The issues are not the same as in past decades. An editorial in another newspaper said the “rewards would be scant,” but $3 trillion to the state economy and $200 million to Santa Barbara County doesn’t sound “scant” to me.
