Get the party started

It's no secret that Cal Poly likes to party, be it Mardi Gras, Halloween, Poly Royal, or Arbor Day. Any holiday will do. And students need a place to find their party hats and themed dishware, right? Thank goodness for Moai Sue.

# Tucked into The Creamery (next to the old Spirits of Africa gallery) is a brand-new party-supply and good-time destination: Moai Sue. Owner Susan Schinsing opened the shop as part of what she calls her "baby boomer retirement," meaning she sold the house up north, moved to a beachy vacation home, and opened the business she's always wanted to run. After 20 years of running a costume shop, Schinsing decided to start over. This time, it's all about fun.

Schinsing came up with the name after visiting Easter Island on a post-retirement vacation. Moai refers the giant, sculpted rock heads. And Sue? Well, that's her name. The moniker is also a reference to the vintage knick-knackery you'll find. Think pink-elephant cocktail sets and handmade aprons for hosting the perfect cocktail party.

Moai Sue specializes in kitschy retro-ware and supplies for party themes you never knew about. Where else can you get eye patches, stuffed parrots, hooks, hats, and of course matching plates and napkins for pirate parties? Or inflatable trees and coconut bras for luaus? Schinsing stocks Mardi Gras beads and costumes year-round and rotates accessories for seasonal holidays like Halloween and Easter. No matter what the occasion, you're sure to find something fun.

The shop is also a great place for fun cards and offbeat gifts. If you're over the hill (or know someone who is) try a shirt that says, "I used to be cool." Even better, pick out one of Schinsing's handmade tote bags. They're extra cute and reasonably priced between $18 and $28.

Moai Sue is located in SLO at 570 Higuera, suite 190. For more info, call 543-6624.
