April 22, 2010, will be the 40th anniversary of the first nationwide Earth Day celebrations. We need to start planning now, so that schools, businesses, government agencies, and other groups will mark Earth Day on their fall and winter agendas to get things rolling by spring.
To kick things off, North County Earth Day volunteers will meet Thursday, Aug. 27, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Atascadero Library community room, to help create, organize, promote, and sponsor such projects as: a free North County Earth Day Festival, publish the North County Earth Month events calendar, art and science contests and demos, concerts, performances, and debates. Other projects could include litter removal and invasive-plant cleanups, native and drought-tolerant planting, alternative vehicle demonstrations and races, green products demonstrations, solar heating, and graywater demonstrations.
Goals are: 1. To create family-oriented, environmental educational events focusing on answers and hope instead of protest or blame; 2. To support local green projects and industries; 3. To offer tips on saving money by conserving water, fuel, and energy, to reduce the carbon footprint and live a healthier lifestyle.
As a former Earth Day director in East L.A. and SLO counties, I hope to see all interested parties at Thursday’s meeting to make this 40th anniversary the best Earth Day ever.
