Free-market ideology has shortchanged public schools

San Luis Obispo

I enjoyed Charles Gill’s parody of right-wing ideology (“Do away with public education,” May 6), which offers a “modest proposal” to

“do away with public education once and for all,” and turn it over to—you guessed it—the “free market.” Since the devil is in the details, he suggests the schools could be run by McDonalds or Starbucks (today’s

lunch menu: Big Macs and espresso) or religious organizations, “except Muslims, of course.” Universities would be, “free from ... accreditation or accountability.” The children of the poor could, of course, be

home schooled, since the poor are all well-educated and have plenty of extra time. Hilarious!

But what is not so funny is that the destruction of public education by the “free market” is already under way. In our economic ignorance, we trusted the greedy and incompetent free-marketeers with our financial well-being, and they have sent us into economic meltdown, causing many public agencies, including schools, to cut back.

Gill wrote, “The free market is the answer to our present education cesspool,” but he has it exactly backwards.  Education is the answer to our present free-market cesspool.
