For sale: police guns, cheap

Want to buy a pistol? You into .40 caliber or 9mm? Your brand Beretta, Glock, or perhaps Heckler and Koch? You’re in luck, because the Arroyo Grande Police Department is having a fire sale to sell its surplus firearms.

The City Council voted unanimously in its Feb. 9 (and 10) meeting to allow the department to designate 45 of its pistols as “surplus property” and clear the way for a sale. According to a city memorandum, the city is hoping to raise $10,000 to $12,000 from the used gats. That comes out to $222 to $267 per pistol. Police say they’re ditching their old rods because they’ve switched to a single model: the Springfield Armory .40-caliber XD (that’s XD for extra-duty), a spiffy number imported from Croatia. Guns and Ammo called it “phenomenally popular.”

Arroyo Grande Police Chief Steven Annibali said the department decided to go with a single model of weapon to replace all its worn, outdated guns—and the city got a good deal for the new ones. The old guns will be offered first to police officers, and any remaining guns after the sale will either be sold to a firearms wholesaler or destroyed, depending how many are left over, Annibali said.
