Fast facts

On Sept. 8, a local farmer took a bad fall from atop a ladder at his ranch. His back was broken, his spinal cord damaged, and he's been unable to return to work. To offset the cost of rehabilitation, his friends and family are organizing a dinner and silent auction in his honor on Feb. 3 at the Cambria Vets Hall. The event will include gift certificates and movie packages, as well as a photo by Brett Wilson. Live music will be provided by John Boone Jones and Friends. The event will run from 3 to 7 p.m., and tickets are $25. For more info, call Shelly Koontz at 927-5548.

Optimum Health Center is hosting a green foods workshop to teach about the benefits of dark leafy greens and help consumers figure out what to do with them. Enjoy samples and go home with some great recipes featuring kale, chard, collards, escarole, and more. The Glorious Greens workshop will be on Feb. 6 between 6:30 and 8 p.m. Space in the class is limited, so RSVP by calling 234-5816. Optimum Health Center is located at 1354 Broad St. in SLO.

The Central Coast Monster Skate Competition is a favorite among local skaters. Last year, more than 350 skaters guys and girls of all ages participated. The competition will stop at skate parks all over the county between March 31 and June 2, but before that can happen, they need a few good sponsors. Organizations, businesses, and individuals should call contest chairperson Paula Anton to donate money or products. The deadline to donate is Feb. 16. For more info, call 470-3472 or visit www.ccmonster.com.
