The Lindamood-Bell Learning Center will be celebrating International Literacy Day on Sept. 8 at 10:30 a.m. and again at 3:30 p.m. The event will include a community book drive, story readings, and a book raffle. Book donations will be accepted all week beginning Sept. 8, and all books collected will be donated to a local literacy organization. Local folk duo Bog Thistle will be hosting and performing at a free bring-your-own-food barbeque at El Chorro Regional Park’s botanical gardens in SLO on Aug. 17, starting at 2 p.m. This will be the final concert of the duo’s self-supported, nationwide tour that has seen them perform for free for seniors at elder-living facilities across the country. The Central Coast Commission for Senior Citizens, Area Agency on Aging has launched a project to assess the needs of older members of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender community in San Luis Obispo County. According to the agency, studies show that many LGBT seniors are at high-risk for isolation, poverty, and homelessness, and avoid access to elder programs and services. The agency encourages all LGBT seniors to visit and fill out a survey, or call 925-9554 for more information.
