A jury determined that the families of Jennifer Myrick, 20, and Marilyn Frost-Zafuto, 55, will receive compensation in the amount of $1.2 million and $600,000, respectively, for the deaths of their loved ones in the 2003 San Simeon earthquake. The two women were killed when the historic Acorn building in Paso Robles collapsed.
During the two-month-long trial it was determined that the building's owners, 84-year-old Mary Mastagni and several family trusts, showed negligence in maintaining the 111-year-old structure, even though the deadline for seismic retrofitting wasn't until 2018. Additionally, Mastagni was found to be in violation of state law for her failure to post a warning for the unreinforced masonry.
In response to the rulings, Jennifer's father, Leroy Myrick, said that greater accountability for landowners is the real issue, not the money.
"This has nothing to do with money," Myrick said. "They could have given us $50 million, and it could never replace our daughter."
