Driving Mr. Newby

They're going to charge him with driving while drunk, hit and run, and having a suspended license. He's going to be billed for all the police work associated with two accidents, including traffic diversion and medical response. Whether or not PG&E is going to make him pay for their troubles is unknown at this time.

What was Rodney Newby thinking? According to accounts gathered by SLO police, Newby, driving his Ford flatbed truck, was making a right off of Foothill about noon on Tuesday into the Albertson's parking lot when he sideswiped a Lexus SUV driven by Jan Thuy Duy Vu as she was leaving the parking lot.

Newby took off at high speed down Foothill toward Los Osos Valley Road. When he got near what used to be This Old House Restaurant, he swerved off the road and sheared off a power pole, which not only cut off electricity in the area but tied up traffic for several hours.

Newby, who is 55 and a resident of SLO, was severely injured in this accident and was initially taken to Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center. Vu was not hurt.
