Don't forget the Episcopalians

I read with interest the article “Chasing the Holy Grail” in the New Times SLO Student Guide ’13 (Aug. 12). I salute you for devoting space and thought to college students’ quest for a system of belief.

College students in SLO should be aware of the Canterbury Club, an Episcopal, LGBTQIA inclusive, and theologically progressive college and young-adult ministry led by chaplain Berkeley Johnson. Most of the participants are students at Cal Poly or Cuesta College, but all young adults are welcome, regardless of whether in college or not. For more information, see

The side-bar to your article did not mention the Episcopal Church, a faith community that is theologically progressive and LGBTQIA inclusive. College-aged students will find a welcome at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in SLO, St. Benedict’s in Los Osos, St. Peter’s in Morro Bay, St. Barnabas’ in Arroyo Grande, and other churches in the county and beyond.

In the interests of full disclosure, the author is a board member of the Canterbury Foundation, and a vestry member at St. Benedict’s Church.
