Disagreement isn’t hate

In the Jan. 6-13 issue, Ray Matthew asks, “Why does New Times hate Christians?

I really doubt that anyone hates fundamentalist evangelical Christians, Ray. To me that paranoid manner of thinking echoes that which far too many folks have engaged in since 9/11: Anyone criticizing the president or the government is a traitor, aids terrorism, hates Bush, doesn’t support our troops, etc. How many times have we heard all that?

So when folks express their opinions about evangelical Christians and their mindset in New Times or any other form of media, they immediately “hate Christians. Never mind the loathing toward these folks espoused by the so-called followers of Jesus as exemplified by the likes of James Dobson, Jerry Falwell, Beverly LaHaye, and Pat Robertson. These “Christians constantly drag out their Bibles and use it — especially the Old Testament, which was, for the most part, rejected by Jesus — to promote their “our way or the highway attitude. They are the only ones who truly know what God desires, whether anyone else accepts that or not. God’s “laws are God’s laws, period. So they say.

This is especially evident in their hatred and rejection of homosexuals. We are all abominations and should be shunned and shoved back into the closet, if not eliminated. Leviticus says so. Yet, they ignore the other admonitions of Leviticus and other sages of the times. More convenient that way. No, Ray, folks don’t hate your brand of Christianity. We just don’t swallow it.
