NEW TIMES What sparked your interest in metal?

SHULTZ I grew up hearing a lot of jazz, ambient music, and, of course, classic rock material such as The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, the Doors, and Neil Young. When I was in fifth or sixth grade, one of my best friends threw on some CDs from his older brother's collection. I remember hearing Guns 'N' Roses, Aerosmith, and Metallica. The band that stuck with me was definitely Metallica; they were completely electrifying. I had never heard such an intensely powerful sound before. I recall back then the lyrics really spoke to me as well. Earlier in their career, Metallica had a lot of cynical anti-war, anti-religion, anti-establishment type material. They also had a sort of dark and mystical edge. I immediately went out and started buying their albums. The first CD I ever bought for myself was Ride the Lightning. This quickly led to Pantera, Slayer, Motörhead, Black Sabbath … it's been a long journey since that day.

NEW TIMES Is Ogoun your only band, or do you play in others?

SHULTZ Ogoun, my stoner-doom metal band, is my only band which is actively playing shows right now. I'm also in a (more-or-less) black metal band called Murk Rider; we're currently writing a three-song full-length album thematically focused on the cosmic-mythological teachings of Joseph Campbell (specifically the hero's journey), the cyclical nature of the universe, and the healing path of the shaman. Lastly, I write and record experimental ambient, acoustic, and black metal by myself under the name Procer Veneficus.

NEW TIMES Any shows lined up?

SHULTZ Right now Ogoun is on the bill for a show at Camozzi's on Dec. 17. There are all sorts of other local metal shows coming up, too—definitely check out the listings, check out the Facebook pages, support all the local bands. I'm sure I speak for the entire local metal scene when I say we're all working hard and we don't exactly get paid much to do this, so any love you guys show us by coming out to our shows is much appreciated. ∆
