County air scores high on 2003 report card

The annual air quality report for 2003, just released by the Air Pollution Control District (APCD) for the County of San Luis Obispo, reaffirms what many already suspect: SLO County continues to enjoy good air quality.
Over the course of the year, the APCD monitors the air at a number of locations around the county. Last year they found that levels of pollutants in this area, namely nitrogen dioxide (NO2), sulfur dioxide (SO2) and carbon monoxide (CO), remained less than significant. NO2 and SO2 standards have not been exceeded in SLO County since 1993, and CO levels have not been exceeded since 1975.
Ambient ozone, which results primarily from industry and motor vehicles, is generally considered a key indicator of air quality. In this county, state hourly ozone standards were only exceeded twice last year — in two isolated incidents in Nipomo and Paso Robles — and the federal ozone standard was exceeded just once.
