Outgoing San Luis Obispo Board of Supervisors Chair Jim Patterson offered congratulatory words to incoming District 5 Supervisor Debbie Arnold (pictured), following her swearing-in at a special Jan. 7 meeting. District Four Supervisor Paul Teixeira was also sworn-in as the new board chair, an honor that rotates every year by district. Arnold started her tenure by criticizing the appointment of District 2 Supervisor Bruce Gibson to vice-chair—to the applause of the room brimming with Arnold family members and supporters—claiming that the rotation dictates that the position go to District 1 Supervisor Frank Mecham. Arnold voted against the appointment, but was beat out by Teixeira’s tie-breaking vote. Mecham was recovering from surgery and not present. The new board kicked off its regularly scheduled meetings on Jan. 8.
