Cal Poly Mustangs lay the smackdown

The Cal Poly Mustang football team is hot. On Nov. 26 it handed it to the University of Montana Grizzlies, 35-21, granting the Grizzlies a quarterfinal match against Texas State this weekend. According to a press release, Cal Poly is the "first California school to earn a berth in the NCAA Division I-AA playoffs."

Several of Cal Poly's redshirt freshmen have been contributing to the team's success. A redshirt freshman is a sophomore academically, but playing in games for his first season.

Against Montana, redshirt freshman running back James Noble broke one school record by rushing for 188 yards and four touchdowns. According to the press release, "Noble now has 1,488 rushing yards for the season, breaking the old school record of 1,424 yards set by Louis Jackson in the 1980 season."

The Mustangs will play Texas State for the Division I-AA Quarterfinal playoffs this Saturday, Dec. 3, at 1 p.m. The game will be televised on ESPN 2 and broadcast on 99.7 FM.
